Two-day police custody for MLA for 'communal and provocative' remarks

Guwahati: A case (No. 520/21) has been registered under section 153/153 (A) of the Indian Penal Code against Bagbor MLA Sherman Ali at Panbazar police station. Besides this, another case (No. 3598/21) was registered against Sherman under IPC sections 153/153 (A), 294/500 at Dispur police station. The third police complaint (number 406/21) was registered at the Geetanagar police station in Guwahati. The Panbazar police arrested the MLA from his residence and produced him in court and sought 10-day custody. But the court sent MLA Sherman to two-day police custody for allegedly making "communal and provocative" remarks.

Sherman Ali's lawyer has requested the court to arrange for medical treatment as he is suffering from diabetes and cardiology. Recently after the Gorukhuti incident, Sherman Ali Ahmed made some remarks against the martyrs of the Assam movement. The MLA's remark caused a stir in the state, due to which FIRs were lodged against him by various organizations in different police stations of the state. Police arrested him today on the basis of all those FIRs.

The APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) on Friday issued a show cause notice to the party's Baghbar MLA Sharman Ali Ahmed over his recent controversial statements about martyrs of the Assam agitation. Show cause notice was given "It has been observed by AICC (All India Congress Committee) and APCC also that despite holding a responsible post as MLA of Congress party, you have made repeated statements in the media and in public on our A platform against the policies of the party having great tendency to destroy the social harmony of the state and matters of communal colour.
