Japan: Japanese broadcaster NHK reported on Monday, citing local government officials, that about 9.5 million people in western Japan have been told to evacuate as the extremely powerful typhoon Nanmadol approaches.
A Level 4 disaster threat alert was issued, which means that it is advised to leave immediately for a safe location. The need to save one's life due to an immediate threat is the fifth and highest level.
In some areas of the regions of Kyushu, Shikoku, and Chugoku, a level 4 alert ordered the evacuation of about 9 million people in more than 4.2 million households.
According to the report, a Level 5 alert was issued for more than 250,000 households and nearly 530,000 people in the prefectures of Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Oita, Kumamoto, and Yamaguchi.
By Tuesday morning, the typhoon is predicted to move over Japan's western coast, move eastward, and pass over the northern parts of Honshu Island from west to east. The typhoon's centre has a pressure of 975 hectopascals and a wind speed of 98.5 feet per second with gusts as high as 45 feet.
As of Monday morning, the typhoon had left one person dead and 69 injured, according to Japanese media. Due to the typhoon, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has delayed leaving for the UN General Assembly until Tuesday.
