New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind signed the Illegal Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill passed by the Central Government from Parliament. According to the bill, the government has the power to declare a person engaged in anti-counterfeiting activities as a terrorist and confiscate his property. At the same time, the Bill has now become a law. Under the Act, once a terrorist is declared a terrorist, his travel will also be prohibited.

According to an Interior Ministry official, the first two terrorists to be declared under the Act will be The Most Wanted Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Hafiz Saeed and Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar. The President gave his assent to the legislation late Thursday night. It was passed by the Lower House on 24th July and the Upper House on 2nd August. The amendment to the law has now given the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) the right to confiscate properties that promote terror.

Earlier, the NIA had to seek permission from the concerned state police chief to sew up assets related to a terrorist. There was a delay in the seeding of such properties in different States relating to terrorists. As per Section 43 of the UAPA, so far only officers of DSP rank and above had the power to investigate such cases. But after the amendment, the Inspector rank officers will also be able to investigate.
