Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday, addressed a programme in Srisailam via video conferencing to wish people on the occasion of Ugadi, which will be celebrated in South India on March 18.

He spoke about the festival and shared the meaning and significance of Ugadi.

“Ugadi ka arth hota hai 'ek yug ki shuruat'. It is the festival of beginning of human civilisation, it is the festival of beginning of everything,” said Modi.

Citing the religious and spiritual importance of Srisailam, Modi quoted Maharishi Ved Vyas, “Mahrishi Ved Vyas had said that those who visit Srisailam rise above all ties,” 

PM Modi hailed the saints watching the video conferencing and appreciated their contribution to protecting the culture and traditions of India.

“There were numerous attempts to hurt our prestigious culture & traditions when India was chained to slavery. It tolerated everything & kept going ahead. What was it that kept it going? Saints like you,” said PM Modi.

PM Modi also talked about Ayushman Bharat, central government’s scheme which ensures a cover of Rs. 5 lakh to a poor family suffering from serious ailments.

Further, he announced the Rashtriya Poshan Karyakram and added that the project has been initiated with a ‘new’ approach. The program aims at eradicating the menace of malnutrition from the country.

PM Modi also took the opportunity to subtly criticised erstwhile leaders for establishing the country’s identity merely to a nation inhabited by snake charmers and by magicians and tantriks.
