Uganda: Despite the impact of Covid-19, Uganda is working to cement its accomplishments in the fight against HIV/AIDS, according to a senior health official. "The National HIV and AIDS Response was not spared by Covid-19. The epidemic, however, resulted in a 41 percent drop in HIV testing and a 37 percent drop in referrals for diagnosis and treatment. As a result, we would have done better "Nelson Musoba, Director General of the Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC), made the remarks during the annual World AIDS Day commemoration on December 1.

Despite the impact of Covid, Musoba stated that the country will continue to fight HIV/AIDS in order to meet the worldwide goal of eliminating AIDS as a public health hazard by 2030.

According to estimates from the Ministry of Health and the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Uganda is on the right track, with HIV prevalence currently at 5.4 percent, down from 6.2 percent in 2016. According to Musoba, the government is implementing the President's Fast Track Initiative, which was established in 2017 with the goal of eliminating AIDS as a public health threat.

According to the Uganda AIDS Commission, 94 percent of people living with HIV in Uganda are aware of their status, 98 percent of those diagnosed are on antiretroviral therapy, and 91 percent of those in treatment are virally suppressed.
