New Delhi: The Cabinet has granted approval for a substantial subsidy increase within the PM Ujjwala Yojana, elevating it from the previous Rs 200 per cylinder to Rs 300 per cylinder. Each domestic LPG cylinder weighs 14.2 kg, and beneficiaries are entitled to receive 12 subsidized cylinders annually. Earlier in August, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had slashed LPG cylinder prices by Rs 200, extending the benefits to all consumers on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. This resulted in a subsidy of Rs 400 per cylinder for Ujjwala beneficiaries.

The PM Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), designed to assist women in impoverished households, currently boasts over 9 crore beneficiaries. Presently, Ujjwala beneficiaries pay Rs 703 for each 14.2 kg domestic gas cylinder, while the market price for the same stands at Rs 903 per unit. With the revised subsidy in place, Ujjwala beneficiaries will now only pay Rs 603 per cylinder. Additionally, there are reports suggesting that the Union Cabinet is considering the inclusion of an additional 75 lakh Ujjwala beneficiaries in the program, potentially increasing the total beneficiary count to 10 crore.

Who Qualifies for PMUY?

The PM Ujjwala Yojana extends subsidies to the following categories of individuals:

Women aged 18 years and older.

Households with no previous LPG connection.

Adult women belonging to the following categories: SC, ST, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), Most Backward Classes (MBC), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), Tea and Ex-Tea Garden tribes,

Forest Dwellers, People residing in Islands and River Islands, enlisted under SECC Households (AHL TIN), or any Poor Household as per the 14-point declaration.

To avail of the benefits of PM Ujjwala Yojana, applicants need to furnish the following documents:

KYC (Know Your Customer) information.

Aadhaar card (except in Assam and Meghalaya).

Ration card.

Bank account number and IFSC (Indian Financial System Code).

Supplementary KYC details indicating family status.
