UK: A new wave of Conservative MPs have submitted letters of no confidence in Boris Johnson, breaking their silence to criticise the UK Prime Minister as the repercussions from the Downing Street parties controversy continues to jeopardise his premiership.
The parties took place between March 28, 2020, and May 17, 2021, according to reports.
Three more MPs have called on Johnson to quit, voicing their amazement and fury at Johnson's actions since the publishing of the interim report, indicating that his position is still in jeopardy despite No 10's desperate attempts to move on from the issue. Given the timing of the disclosures, several Johnson supporters believe there is now a renewed coordinated campaign to depose Johnson.
In a letter to a constituent, Penny Mordaunt, the commerce minister and former defence secretary, became one of the most senior members of the cabinet to criticise the Downing Street parties, according to the newspaper.
If there is a leadership election, Mordaunt, who is considered a dark horse candidate, told a member of the public she wants reassurance regarding Downing Street's "competence and honesty."
