KIEV: Ukrainian Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky wrote on Facebook on Thursday that a Ukrainian National Guard serviceman was apprehended after shooting five persons dead and wounding five others at a military facility in the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

For unclear reasons, a 21-year-old soldier opened fire on persons inside a guard house at the Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant at 4 a.m. local time (GMT 0200).

The incident resulted in the deaths of four troops and one civilian woman, as well as the serious injuries of five others.

According to the minister, Ukrainian police have opened a criminal inquiry into the incident.

The Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant manufactures launch vehicles, rocket engines, ballistic missiles, and other defence and aerospace equipment for Ukraine.
