New Delhi: The Indian government has vehemently denied reports of Indian nationals being held hostage in Ukraine. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, "Our embassy in Ukraine is in constant touch with Indian nationals living there. We are aware that we have evacuated many students from Kharkiv yesterday in collaboration with the Ukrainian authorities. We have not received any information about any student being held, hostage.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said, "We are coordinating better with countries in the region, including Russia, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova. In the last few days, a large number of Indian nationals have been rescued from Ukraine. We appreciate the help given by the Ukrainian authorities to make this possible. We thank the western neighbours of Ukraine for arranging their accommodation while waiting for flights to bring Indian nationals from Ukraine and back home.''
Earlier, Russia's defence ministry had said that Ukrainian troops had taken a large group of Indian students hostage in Kharkiv. A spokesman for the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement, "To our knowledge, Ukrainian authorities are forcibly keeping a large group of Indian students in Kharkiv who want to leave Ukraine and go to Belgorod. In fact, they're being held, hostage."
