Sports icons and celebrities from Ukraine's war-torn country have taken up weapons to protect their country against invading Russian forces. Heavyweight boxers, Olympic wrestlers, former tennis players, and a football club management are among the Ukrainian sports icons and stars who have taken up arms against Russian soldiers.
Legendary Ukrainian heavyweight boxers are leading the fight against Russian forces among the country's sports stars. The Klitschko brothers, heavyweight fighters Vitali (50) and Wladimir (45), have taken up guns to defend their homeland. Wladimir Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, Ukrainian, is a former WBC and WBO champion, while Vitali Klitschko is a former WBA, WBO, and IBF champion.
Wladimir Klitschko joined Ukraine's reserve army last month, before the conflict broke out. "I'm sorry, but I don't have any other options." Its something I must do. In a video message, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko declared, "I will fight."
The Klitschko brothers are joined by Olexander Usyk, the reigning heavyweight champion who has relocated to Ukraine from London. Meanwhile, Ukrainian tennis star Sergiy Stakhovsky has joined to resist the Russian invasion by joining the territorial defence army. Stakhovsky is most known for beating Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013. Dmytro Pidruchny and Dmytro Mazurchuk, both Olympians, have also joined the territorial army.
