NAIROBI: According to the UN relief agency, humanitarian partners have sought more than 500 billion shillings (USD 4.4 billion) in order to deliver life-saving assistance and protection to about 29.1 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia in 2022.

Due to drought in the first quarter of 2022, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) warned on Wednesday that between 12 and 14 million people in the three countries are waking up each day with high levels of acute food insecurity and severe water shortages.

The UN assistance agency urged donors to support the robust network of local, community-based, and women-led organisations, including refugee-led organisations, that work tirelessly in drought-stricken areas on a daily basis. It praised Kenya's and Somalia's declarations of emergency, and urged governments around the region to prioritise the drought crisis by giving the required funding to give timely and comprehensive assistance to their people.

According to the UNICEF, approximately 5.5 million children in these three countries would be acutely malnourished in 2022, with more than 1.6 million severely malnourished. According to the report, animal herd migration has reduced milk availability, compromising nutrition, particularly for children under the age of five.
