Juba: The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has stepped up security patrols in Unity state and the Ruweng Administrative Area following clashes that resulted in the deaths of at least 25 people over the weekend.

In a statement released on Monday evening, UNMISS announced heightened patrols and increased engagement with local authorities and security services in the affected regions to restore calm.

Nicholas Haysom, Head of UNMISS, appealed for peace, expressing deep concern over the escalating violence. "We urge national and local authorities to take all necessary measures to prevent further clashes among armed youth and to de-escalate tensions," Haysom emphasized.

He stressed the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue instead of violence, underscoring the devastating impact on affected communities.

According to local reports, the violence erupted on June 22 during a handover of stolen cattle between officials from Rubkona county in Unity State and Aliny county in Ruweng Administrative Area. Santo Lual Mayuol, acting minister of information in Ruweng Administrative Area, confirmed the incident, stating that skirmishes have persisted, keeping the situation tense.

UNMISS reported that the violence has spread to other areas, heightening tensions with additional reports of armed youth mobilizing. "Civilians in Pariang, located north of Unity state, are reportedly fleeing due to fears of retaliatory attacks," UNMISS stated.

In response, UNMISS has intensified peacekeeping patrols and reinforced troop numbers at their temporary bases to protect civilians amidst the deteriorating security situation. Patrols have been deployed to Manga port and the site of the initial violence in Aliny County, Ruweng Administrative Area, to prevent further outbreaks.

The UN mission emphasized its commitment to supporting local authorities in restoring stability and ensuring the safety of civilians in conflict-affected areas.

The situation remains fluid as efforts continue to quell the violence and facilitate peaceful resolution of disputes in South Sudan.
