Addis Ababa: Ethiopia has detained UN employees for "indulging in terrorist activity" during the Emergency. The United Nations and an official spokesman have been informed in this regard. He said that the year-long war in the country is intensifying and the campaign to arrest the Tigre community has also intensified. A human rights activist, speaking on condition of anonymity, said all the detained employees belong to the Tigre community.
United Nations spokesman Stephen Dujarric said on Tuesday that there was no reason for the detention of UN employees, but it has reported large-scale detention of the Tigre community, including lawyers since the emergency was declared in Addis Ababa. Dujarric told presspersons that some were also detained during the visit of the UN humanitarian chief to Ethiopia. Dujarric said the other six detained personnel were later released. Dependents of many employees were also taken into custody.
The United Nations has asked Ethiopia's foreign ministry to release those detained immediately. In a message, government spokesman Legacy Tulu said without giving any details that he was detained "for wrongdoing and involvement in terrorist acts". He said it had "nothing to do with his office and work." On the official spokesperson's statement, Dujarric said, 'We have no further information about it.'
