United Nations: India’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, has formally taken over his role, pledging to revitalise the global organisation. Following his credential presentation on Monday, Harish immediately addressed the Security Council, advocating for increased involvement of major troop-contributing countries in peacekeeping decision-making processes.

Ahead of the upcoming summit starting September 22, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate, Harish engaged in consultations with various diplomats, focusing on collaborative issues of mutual interest.

In posts on X, Harish shared that he and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres concurred on the necessity of strengthening and reforming multilateralism in both political and economic spheres to address contemporary challenges and seize new opportunities. He affirmed India’s commitment, under PM Modi’s leadership, to advancing reformed multilateralism and revitalising the UN.

Harish also met with Philemon Yang, the soon-to-be president of the General Assembly, offering India’s support in his new role. With 34 years of diplomatic experience, including his recent role as ambassador to Germany, Harish brings extensive expertise to his new position. His previous assignments include roles in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the US, with significant experience in Gaza and the Palestine Authority.

Upon starting his tenure, Harish paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi with a floral tribute at his statue on the UN campus. He has also met with General Assembly President Dennis Francis and Amandeep Singh Gill, the UN secretary-general’s envoy on technology. Francis expressed gratitude for India’s ongoing support during his presidency.

Additionally, Harish engaged in discussions on “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” with Yamazaki Kazuyuki, Japan’s Permanent Representative and a member of the G4 group advocating for expanding the Security Council’s permanent membership. He also met with Sergio Franca of Brazil and Osama Abdelkhalek of Egypt, focusing on cooperation in the Gaza peace process.
