NEW DELHI: An under-construction tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in the Makerkote area of Ramban district collapsed late Thursday night, trapping several persons. The event occurred during a tunnel audit, leaving four people injured and several others stranded. A little section of the tunnel on the front side of the tunnel in Khoni nallah fell, according to a report. The police and army have began a rescue mission, according to officials.

"A segment of an under-construction tunnel collapsed near Khooni Nala, Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in the Makerkote district of Ramban," the Deputy Commissioner stated. Six to seven people were believed to be trapped; one was rescued. "A rescue operation is now underway."

According to the J&K Disaster Management Authority, ten labourers are believed to be buried beneath the rubble.Machines and vehicles positioned outside the tunnel, including bulldozers and trucks, have been damaged while the rescue operation continues.

According to officials, Ramban Deputy Commissioner Massaratul Islam and Senior Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma are on the scene, directing the rescue operation.

Officials have also stated that people stuck inside the tunnel are employees of the auditing firm.
