The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Wednesday condemned the execution of a journalist in Myanmar, Sai Win Aung, during an army attack in the Southeast.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay condemned the assassination of Sai Win Aung, better known as A Sai K, who died on December 25 in Lay Kay Kaw, a town close the Thai border.

According to UNESCO, the reporter was documenting the situation of refugees in Kayin state for the Federal News Journal when he was killed in an artillery bombardment by Myanmar's armed forces. The UN agency, on the other hand, encouraged Myanmar's authorities to undertake a thorough inquiry into the incident.

"I strongly deplore Sai Win Aung's assassination. Workers in the media, such as Sai Win Aung, put their lives on the line to keep the people informed.  "Their efforts ought to be acknowledged, and their safety should be ensured in accordance with international humanitarian law, which prohibits attacks on civilians," Azoulay added.

According to UNESCO, Aung was the second journalist assassinated in Myanmar in December 2021. UNESCO promotes press freedom by pushing for journalist safety and combating impunity for those who assault them.
