New Delhi: The country has undergone a number of changes in the recent past, while PM Narendra Modi has announced the renaming of India's highest sports award Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and the "Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award" after Major Dhyan Chand. Prime Minister Modi tweeted the news. Major Dhyan Chand was one of the leading players in India who brought respect and pride for India, he tweeted. It is true that India's highest sports honour will be named after him. Union Minister Anurag Thakur welcomed the centre's decision and thanked the Prime Minister.

In a tweet, he said, "Major Dhyan Chand Ji gave a new Identity to India on the world stage with his extraordinary game and became a source of inspiration for countless sportspersons.'' PM Narendra Modi Ji's heartfelt thanks to PM Narendra Modi for awarding Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award to Khel Ratna Award in view of public sentiment. In fact, PM Narendra Modi announced this on Friday in a tweet that the decision has been taken following a request from the people of India. Khel Ratna Award is the highest sports honour in the country.

I have been receiving many requests from people across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand, Modi said. Respecting the spirit of individuals, the Khel Ratna Award will be called the major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. It may be noted that Major Dhyan Chand, who is called the 'magician' of hockey, has made an incredible contribution to hockey. He scored a total of 13 goals in his last Olympics in Berlin in 1936. His stellar performance in hockey is still remembered today.
