Mumbai: Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Ramdas Athawale pleaded for a caste census in the country last Sunday. He says this will help the needy to avail social, economic and educational benefits. In fact, recently, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale told reporters, "Caste based census is required to detect community-wise population, which will help the needy to get social, economic and educational benefits."

The Union Minister also emphasized on increasing reservation so that socially and economically backward people can take advantage of it. Moreover, he said, "The reservation limit should not exceed 50 per cent as per rules, but there is a need to increase the quota for social justice." He further said, "He has held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard." In fact, Ramdas Athawale has said, "The purpose of introducing reservation was to empower people socially and economically, but those who are rich are mostly using it."

At the same time, he also said, "This kind of trend needs to be stopped. Earlier this month, on July 5, the Maharashtra Assembly passed a resolution requesting the Centre to provide data on the 2011 census so that the State Backward Classes Commission could prepare an empirical data on obc population, which aims to restore political reservation for the community in local bodies. On the other hand, opposition BJP opposed the move and termed it politically motivated and alleged that the Grand Development Alliance coalition government was shirking its responsibility on the issue of reservation."
