Dubai: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday made a big announcement saying it will no longer censor films releasing in theatres. UAE's media regulatory authority will now replace censorship in films and release them in 21 plus ratings. Instead of cutting sensitive scenes that hurt traditional Islamic sentiments in UAE, it will now be rated 21 plus.

in a tweet, the UAE's Media Regulatory Authority wrote, 'Films will now be released in theatres according to their international version.' Significantly, films with adult content have been cut or edited regularly in the UAE so far. According to IGN Middle East, several scenes were cut due to sexual content in Adam Driver and Lady starrer 'House of Gucci.' The release of Marvel Studios 'Eternals' was also delayed for the same reason.

UAE's decision is also crucial because it wants to reduce its economy's dependence on oil. The UAE has made a number of changes to its laws in recent years. The Gulf wants its image before the world to be that of a liberal and reformist Islamic country, which promotes foreign investment and tourism. The 21 plus rating is also a new attempt for UAE to boost this image.
