Everyone is aware of the fact that India gained independence on August 15 in 1947, after decades of slavery by the British. This day is recorded in golden letters in Indian history. The Portuguese had occupied the Indian state of Goa at one time. The Portuguese had taken full authority over Goa and they amended their constitution to accept Goa as their state. However, Goa was liberated from the Portuguese occupation in 1961 by the Indian Army.

On 19 December 1961, the Indian Army started the task of expelling the Portuguese from Goa and India got success in this work. The Indian Army liberated Goa from the Portuguese and merged it with India. In this way, Goa became independent almost 14 years after India's independence.

It is the least populous state of India in terms of population. While the population of Uttar Pradesh is around 23 crore and it is the most populous state in India, the population of Goa is only around 20 lakhs. Its capital is Panaji.
