Melbourne: Former Delhi cricketer Unmukt Chand agreed to a deal with Melbourne Renegades on Thursday, making him the first Indian male player to sign up for Australia's domestic T20 competition, the Big Bash League.

Women's cricketers from India have long competed in domestic leagues around the world, including the Women's Big Bash League, but male cricketers from India are currently banned from competing in international tournaments. To play in foreign leagues, the players must retire from all forms of cricket. Former India U19 captain Unmukt Chand joins Big Bash's Melbourne Renegades.

Unmukt, a 28-year-old opening batsman, left Indian cricket earlier this year to play in the United States, allowing him to compete in the BBL and other domestic leagues around the world.

"I've always admired the Big Bash and the international players who participate... it's a fantastic platform, and I've always wanted to play there. I'm really hoping to make a name for myself in the coming years and hopefully win championships for the teams I play for "Melbourne Renegades quoted Unmukt as saying in a release on Thursday.
