UN: A resolution on the protection of education in armed conflict has been adopted by the United Nations Security Council. According to reports, Resolution 2601 strongly condemns all violations of applicable international law involving the recruitment and use of children by parties to armed conflicts, as well as their re-recruitment, killing and maiming, rape and other forms of sexual violence, and abductions.

The resolution calls on UN member states to develop effective measures to prevent and respond to attacks on schools and educational facilities, as well as domestic legal frameworks to ensure that their relevant international legal obligations are met. It condemns the use of schools by armed forces and armed groups in violation of international law, and recognises that such use by armed forces and armed groups may make schools legitimate targets of attack, jeopardising the safety and education of children and teachers.

It urges member states to protect schools as safe spaces free of all forms of violence, noting that attacks on girls' education can lead to serious violations such as abduction, rape, and other forms of sexual violence, and urging member states to take steps to address girls' equal enjoyment of their right to education. The resolution urges member states to put an end to the recruitment and re-recruitment of children by warring parties by providing quality education in a safe environment in conflict zones, among other things. It emphasizes the importance of assisting disabled children who have been affected by armed conflict.
