United Nations: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has voiced concern about the sentence of Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's former de facto leader who was deposed in a military coup on February 1st, and deposed President Win Myint.

The Security Council members renewed their calls for the release of all individuals who have been arbitrarily arrested since the military takeover in a statement, according to sources.

"The members of the Security Council reiterated their continued support for Myanmar's democratic transition, emphasising the importance of upholding democratic institutions and processes, refraining from violence, pursuing constructive dialogue and reconciliation in accordance with the will and interests of Myanmar's people, fully respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, and upholding the rule of law," the statement continued.

The members of the council reaffirmed their firm commitment to Myanmar's sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity, and unity. The two deposed leaders were sentenced to four years in prison on Monday, but their sentences were later reduced to two years apiece. Under the Natural Disaster Management Law, they were found guilty of "inciting dissent and breaching Covid norms."
