PRAYAGRAJ:  For the third year in a row, the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UP Board) has decided to cover only 70% of the authorised annual syllabus in the new academic session for almost one crore students in classes 9 through 12.

These students are enrolled in over 27,735 schools affiliated with the Board across the state. The 30% cut, like in the previous two years, has been maintained in the syllabus posted on the board's official website.

According to board authorities, the decision was made due to a lack of regular studies for the previous two years as a result of Covid and the mental stress that the kids are experiencing as a result of it. Officials admitted that this year, following the Class 10 and Class 12 tests, practical examinations and answer sheet review disrupted school courses for over two months.

Only 70% of the curriculum would be taught and students would be assessed based on the reduced curriculum covered in order to provide a comfortable environment for kids who have returned to school after two years and for their holistic development without putting any additional pressure.

This year, the UP Board will also conduct Class 9 and Class 10 written examinations in a revised format. For the first time, there will be five monthly examinations during the academic session that will be used to assess pupils. There will be three exams with multiple-choice questions and two with questions that require descriptive answers.

The UP Board's decision to reduce its annual syllabus by 30% follows a similar decision made by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which has also preserved the 30% curriculum cut implemented in the previous two pandemic-hit years.
