Lucknow: Political turmoil has intensified in the state since the announcement of the dates for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. The defection of MLAs is at its peak in the state. Meanwhile, Gajraj Singh, who has been MLA from the Hapur assembly seat four times from the Congress, has taken over the reins of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) after meeting Jayant Chaudhary on Thursday. Gajraj Singh's decision is seen as a major setback for Congress.

Gajraj Singh had reached the Assembly in 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2012 after winning from Hapur seat on Congress ticket. He has contested on a Congress ticket about seven times so far. That is why his name is counted among the party's top leaders in the state. Gajraj Singh had contested on a Congress ticket in 2017 too but lost this election.

The Congress on Thursday released the first list of 125 candidates for the UP assembly elections, including 50 women candidates, including the mother of the Unnao gang-rape victim. Party National General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra released the first list of candidates through a digital press conference and specifically mentioned the names of 50 women candidates.
