LUCKNOW: The government of Uttar Pradesh, led by Yogi Adityanath has decided to spread awareness among farmers and other people about the little-known millets like Sawaan and Kodo.

250 farmers will be invited to a workshop that will be held at the state level, according to a representative for the state government. He promised to inform the farmers on millet farming, storage, and processing. District-level workshops of a similar nature would be scheduled. For the purpose of disseminating information about them, the state administration will enlist several media outlets.

This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that 2023 will be observed as the International Year of Millets in his "Mann ki Baat" programme.

India supported a resolution that the UN General Assembly adopted in April 2021 designating 2023 as the International Year of Millets.
The Government's objective is to increase public awareness about the health benefits of millets. "Today, the craze for these very coarse grains, millets, is rising over the world," said Modi. He mentioned that when foreign visitors came to India, Indians served them millet-based foods, and they were greatly enjoyed.

PM Modi said, India's agriculture, culture, and civilisation have all used millets or coarse grains since ancient times. India, the world's top producer of millets, is leading the charge to make the millet craze a success. Millets are advantageous for farmers in general and small farmers in particular since they grow quickly and don't need a lot of water. The ideal fodder is also said to be millet hay.

Experts claim that both types of millet are very nutrient-dense; Sawaan has three times as much phosphorus as rice and Kodo has more calcium. Extreme weather is used to cultivate crops. They allegedly formerly served as a substitute for rice.

Notably, the awareness about these millets would be spread, ahead of the international millet year.
