Barabanki: Uttar Pradesh Police has registered an FIR against the news portal The Wire for spreading enmity and disturbing communal harmony in the society by propagating misinformation through a video documentary about the Barabanki illegal mosque demolition case. In fact, on Thursday, Barabanki police said they have registered a case against three journalists of the portal and The Wire - Siraj Ali, Mohammad Anis, and Mukul S Chauhan. Another person has been identified as Mohammad Naeem, who recently spread lies when an illegal mosque was demolished in Barabanki.

The Indian Express and The Scroll described Mohammed Anis as a journalist for The Wire in their news, although he has been identified as a local citizen in FIR. The video depicts Mohammed Anis as a local, making misleading claims regarding the mosque demolition. A case has been registered against them under sections 153, 153-A, 505 (1) (B), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and 34 of the IPC. On June 23, The Wire claimed in a video documentary that the district administration illegally demolished a 100-year-old mosque in the city. For this, The Wire had interviewed some Muslims who claimed that they were members of the mosque committee.

He had claimed that the members had proof that the structure was legal. In his documentary, The Wire had said that Muslim people in the locality had protested against the demolition of the mosque and said that the police officers had lathi-charged and pacified it. The Wire had claimed that the Barabanki police specifically targeted the Muslim community and threw their religious texts (Quran) into the drain. Refuting such allegations made by The Wire, Barabanki police said the claims made in The Wire's documentary were false. It further said that The Wire was trying to incite communal violence by spreading misleading information about the demolition of an illegal mosque on its website.

Superintendent of Police (Barabanki) Yamuna Prasad said there was a man named Mohammad Naeem in the documentary who made "false claims of religious books being thrown into rivers and drains." Mohammad Anis had claimed that his Quran and Hadith were thrown into the drain by the police. The officer said, "A complaint has been registered by a police officer on the basis of which FIR has been registered. Further action is underway.''
