Mirzapur:  The UP Special Task Force (UPSTF) probing the AYUSH admission scam detained the owner of a private medical college and hospital in Mirzapur early on Wednesday, March 1.

The Director of Santushti Ayurvedic Medical College, Dr. Ritu Garg,  in Mirzapur was arrested and sent to jail till March 13, the Special Task Force said.

Garg has been detained on suspicion of conspiring with former Ayurveda director SN Singh and counselling coordinator Umakant Yadav to fudge the NEET merit list in order to facilitate the admission of unworthy students.

Anomalies were noted by the Union minister of Ayush in the AYUSH fraud case in November 2022 over undergraduate student admission to state-run government and private ayurveda, Unani, and homoeopathic institutes. Investigations found that 932 students were admitted without using the order of merit that would have been expected.

Prof. Dr. SN Singh, the former Director of Ayurveda Services and Member Secretary for Counseling, Principal, and Superintendent, as well as Umakant Yadav, Officer-in-Charge of the Directorate of Education, Ayurveda Services, the original post, Professor Government Ayurveda Medical College, have already been charged by the STF. Both of these individuals were suspended in November.

Earlier, in November last year, the UP government recommended the Central government to conduct a CBI inquiry into the alleged irregularities in admissions in AYUSH colleges in the year 2021 in the state. The recommendation was made on the directions of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
