In Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, the mother of a young man who had eloped with a girl from his neighbourhood was assaulted publicly before being hacked to death.
The woman's family was furious because their daughter had married the young man, 21, against their wishes, and they determined to exact 'vengeance' on her when she returned home from the market. They grabbed her, thrashed her with batons, and rained sickle blows on her. Her husband and neighbours took her to the hospital, where she died. Her son hasn't returned home yet.
Six of the girl's relatives have been charged with rioting and culpable homicide under IPC provisions pertaining to rioting and culpable homicide. According to reports, the victim, Chameli Kashyap, was a resident of the Faridpur police station's Barua area. She and her husband had previously fled the village because they were afraid of being attacked since their son had eloped with the girl. On Friday, she returned home to seek for her address.
SP Rajkumar Agarwal said, the victim's son eloped with the accused's daughter, who is from the same community. They were both adults when they married. The boy's parents left the village after their marriage and lived somewhere else. When the incident occurred, they had only been in their residence for a few days. Her husband called the cops and took her to a Faridpur community health centre, where she died.
"Based on her husband's allegation, we have filed an FIR against six persons under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with lethal weapons), and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder)," he said. "Four of the accused have been arrested, and the remaining two will be in our possession soon," the officer continued. We have provided appropriate protection for the family and have deployed a police team in the area to maintain peace."
