LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has held a meeting on road safety and asked officials to follow the 5E formula of education, environment , enforcement, engineering snf emergency care to cut  down cases of fatalities caused due to accidents.

He also termed "worrying" the fact that while Covid-19 took away 23,600 lives over 3 years road accidents led to loss of 21,200 lives in just 1 year in 2022. The government will be carrying out a month-long campaign on road safety from January 5 to February 4. He said the responsibility for road safety is not just limited to one department and community effort is needed to prevent accidents.

"Other than bad road design, the main causes include excessive speeding, overloading, failing to employ safety equipment, and drunk driving. Large towns like Kanpur, Agra, Prayagraj, Aligarh, Bulandshahr, and Mathura are where the majority of cases occur. Focus should be placed on the motorways and national highways that connect these cities. It is necessary to create a task force to prevent overloading " he said.

In response to a string of incidents caused by fog, Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath attended a meeting on Tuesday and stated that community effort was required to prevent accidents and that responsibility for road safety was not simply limited to one department. The CM advised PWD and NHAI to identify problem areas and develop both immediate and long-term measures to remedy poor road engineering.

To improve traffic management, "homeguards should be appointed along with traffic police," the CM added. "It should also be verified that the registration number of a vehicle and the number on the FASTag are the same." The CM was informed that 38% of the accidents that occurred last year were the result of overspeeding. 12% of accidents were caused by driving in the incorrect way, while 9% were brought on by using a mobile phone while driving.

In the same time frame, 40% of accidents were on interstates, while 30% happened on state roadways. The CM stated that more motorway and highway patrols are required in this circumstance. He recommended routine inspections of state-owned buses used for transportation. Buses that don't adhere to the fitness requirements shouldn't be used.

The CM emphasised that accident victims needed to receive timely medical assistance "The home, transportation, PWD, health, and motorway authority departments should coordinate their efforts. The time it takes for an ambulance to arrive is something that needs to be sped up, and the injured should be transferred to the hospital as soon as possible "He continued by saying that trauma centres ought to have access to orthopaedic and neurosurgeons.
