Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh plans to mobilise the farming community by commencing a state-wide effort on December 1 to enroll as many farmers as possible in the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), a federal crop insurance scheme.

The flagship programme provides farmers with coverage and financial assistance in the event of crop failure due to natural disasters, pests, or illnesses.  The move comes as Parliament begins its winter session on Monday, when the Centre is expected to introduce a Bill to repeal the three agriculture legislation.  The Uttar Pradesh government will lead the week-long push in collaboration with the ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare, as well as financial institutions such as commercial banks and regional rural banks.

This is the ruling BJP's latest attempt to appease farmers, who have pledged to continue protesting until their demands, which include a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the dismissal of junior Home Minister Ajay Misra Teni, whose son Ashish is a suspect in the Lakhimpur violence, are met.

According to agriculture department figures, Uttar Pradesh had a total cultivable area of more than 35.5 lakh hectares in 2019-20, with roughly 47 lakh farmers covered under PMFBY, as of August 31.
