Urjit Patel commenced his term as the 24th governor of RBI today, succeeding Raghuram Rajan whose three year tenure ended yesterday. Before becoming the governor, Urjit Patel served as the deputy governor since January 2013.

One of the most important assignments of Patel as the deputy governor was to chair the Expert Committee to Revise and Strengthen the Monetary Policy Framework .He also had other assignments in public and private sectors. DR.Patel has worked closely with several state and central government high level committees.

Just like his predecessor, Urjit patel has also served at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).He has several publications in the areas of macroeconomics, monetary policy, public finance, international trade, and regulatory economics, the RBI said.

Patel has a PhD in economics from Yale University, and M Phil from university of oxford and BSc from the University of London.
