The US Food and Drug Administration's (USFDA) advisory committee has approved Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11. The nodes by the agency's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee will now be considered by the FDA, which could issue a final conclusion within days, as per reports.

Similarly, the vaccine advisory group of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to make its own recommendation next week. If approved, the vaccine regimen would provide protection against the virus to nearly 28 million more children in the United States as the delta variant spreads. Furthermore, the move would make Covid shots available to nearly the entire US population, with only children aged 4 and younger remaining.

The Joe Biden administration has purchased enough vaccines to inoculate all 5- to 11-year-olds in the United States, which means it will be implemented as soon as the FDA and CDC give their approval. To make the shots more bearable, the US will give them out in smaller doses and with smaller needles.

Covid-19 is "the 8th-highest killer of children in this age group over the past year," Dr. Amanda Cohn, a top CDC vaccine official was quoted as saying. "Use of this vaccine will prevent deaths, will prevent ICU admissions and will prevent significant long-term adverse outcomes in children," Cohn said.
