WASHINGTON: The US Central Command (CENTCOM), American troops have killed two senior members of the Islamic State (IS) terror organisation in an airstrike in northern Syria, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement published here on Friday.

The attack that was conducted at 6:32 p.m. on Thursday reportedly killed Abu-Hashum al-Umawi, a deputy IS leader in Syria, and another top member of the terror organisation who was connected to him.

"According to preliminary reports, no civilians were killed or hurt during this operation. No US personnel or equipment was lost or damaged, and no US personnel or equipment was injured," the statement added.

"This strike will weaken IS' ability to destabilise the region and strike at our soldiers and partners," CENTCOM commander General Michael Kurilla said. He was cited as adding in the statement, "Our soldiers remain in the region to secure the lasting defeat of IS."

The airstrike on Thursday came a day after Rakkan Wahid al-Shammri was killed in a US raid close to the village of Qamishli in northern Syria. He was a figure known to enable the transportation of militants and weapons to support IS operations.

One of al-associates Shammri's was hurt during the operation on Wednesday, while two other people were taken into custody by US troops, according to a second statement from CENTCOM.

This year in Syria, the US has struck a number of prominent IS officials. The IS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was killed in a US operation in northwest Syria in February after he detonated himself.

Since the 2019 operation that resulted in the death of the previous IS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, it was the biggest American raid in Syria.

In November 2019, Qurayshi was appointed the terrorist organization's commander at the same time as IS declared Baghdadi dead.
