A new bipartisan resolution in the US House of Representatives has been introduced to honor the shared values of democracy, religious pluralism, human rights, and the rule of law between the United States and India. Proposed by Congressman Tom Suozzi, a Democrat, the resolution has gained support from 36 co-sponsors across both major political parties.
The resolution underscores the significance of the strategic partnership between India and the US, emphasizing that it stands as one of the most crucial democratic alliances globally. It highlights the mutual commitment to democratic principles, religious diversity, human rights, and legal fairness that bind the two nations.
The resolution also recognizes the strong and beneficial people-to-people connections between India and the US. It points out that the Indian diaspora, which numbers over 4 million in the United States, has made notable achievements in American society. Approximately 80% of Indian-Americans have earned college degrees, reflecting their substantial contribution to various fields.
India’s rich tradition of religious diversity, including vibrant Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, and Jain communities, is also acknowledged. The resolution notes that about 80% of Indian immigrants in the US practice Hinduism, with the American Hindu population making up around 1% of the total population.
Special recognition is given to the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha for its significant role in the US. Established by Pramukh Swami Maharaj in New York City on August 4, 1974, BAPS has expanded to over 100 mandirs across the country over the past 50 years. These mandirs provide a welcoming environment for worship, community gatherings, and educational activities, serving as spiritual homes for many families.
The resolution applauds BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and its volunteers for their enduring contributions to American society over the last five decades.
