WASHINGTON: Anthony Fauci, the US' top infectious disease expert, tested positive for Covid-19 on a rapid antigen test.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), is "completely vaccinated and has been boosted twice," according to an official statement released late Wednesday. Fauci will isolate himself and work from home, according to the statement, adding that he has not had recent touch with Vice President Joe Biden or other top government officials.

When he tests negative, Fauci, 81, will follow the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Covid-19 guidelines as well as medical advice from his doctor and return to work.  Since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, he has been the face of the country's struggle against Covid-19.

Since 1984, he has served as the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and he has counselled seven US presidents. Fauci, who is also Biden's main medical advisor, is the most recent member of the administration to contract Covid-19.

Xavier Becerra, the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), stated on June 13 that he had contracted the virus, while Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was sick on June 6 and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland on June 1.
