Baghdad- US forces have killed Abdul Hamid al-Matar, a senior leader of the terror group Al-Qaida in a drone strike in Syria. A US Central Command spokesman has informed in this regard. "The killing of this senior Al-Qaida leader will hamper the terrorist organization's ability to plot and carry out global attacks that threaten US civilians, our allies and innocent civilians," U.S. Army Major John Rigsby said in a statement late On Friday.

Major John Rigsby said it is not known whether the attack caused any other casualties. He further said that the attack was carried out using an MQ-9 aircraft. The attack comes two days after an attack on a US checkpoint in southern Syria. "The terror group al-Qaida remains a threat to the United States and our allies," Rigsby added. Al-Qaida uses Syria as a safe haven to rebuild the organization, coordinate with external allies and plan external operations.

However, Rigsby did not say whether the US drone strike was in response to the attack on the outpost. He also did not say which Syrian region the attack was carried out.
