This Wednesday in an effort to fight climate change the United States formally exited from the Paris Agreement fulfilling a years-long promise by President Donald Trump to withdraw the world’s second-largest greenhouse gas emitter from the global pact. But the duration will be determined by the outcome of the tight US election contest. Trump`s Democratic rival, Joe Biden, has promised to rejoin the agreement if elected.

Patricia Espinosa, executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) said the US withdrawal will leave a gap in all steps of the Paris Agreement. The country is still a party to the UNFCCC. Espinosa said the body will assist US in any effort to rejoin the agreement. First announcement to withdraw was made in June 2017 by Trump, but due to the requirements of the deal he was unable to withdraw till now. 

Japan announced 2050 as the deadline to attain zero-emission in the country

Biden has promised to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 under a broad $2 trillion plan to transform the economy. The Rhodium Group reported in 2020 the United States will be at around 21% below 2005 levels of emission which was expected to increase by 30% in Trump administration by 2035. China, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union have recently announced their carbon-cutting targets.
