US Open 2019: Canada's Bianca Andreescu reaches semi-finals

New Delhi: 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu has confirmed her place in the semi-finals of the US Open. She defeated Alyse Mertons of Belgium. Andrescu beat 25th seed Mertons 3-6 6-2 6-3 and will now play 13th seed Bencich of Switzerland in the semi-finals on Thursday to beat 23rd seed Donna Vekich of Croatia 7-6 6-3. 

Andrescue thus became the first young player to make it to the final four of the US Open in a decade. Andrescu and Bencich have never played each other. At the same time, Serena Williams will try to match the Margate court record by winning the 24th Grand Slam singles title and on Thursday she will face fifth seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in the second semi-final.

Bencich said, 'It is nice to reach the semi-finals. I was dreaming of this day. I have worked very hard for this and yes, it is a very good feeling. The winner of this year's Indian Wells and Toronto Andrescue became the first young player to reach the final four of the US Open after Caroline Wozniacki in 2009. On the other hand, Rafael Nadal defeated Argentina's Diego Schwartzman 6-4 7-5 6-2 in the semi-finals of the US Open Tennis Grand Slam and will now face Matio Berretini of Italy.
