USA: Police in a Los Angeles suburb shot and killed a stabbing suspect who was attempting to flee on what was left of his amputated legs. Only a few weeks after a Tennessee man was killed by police after being beaten during a traffic stop, the incident sparked new outrage over police brutality.

When they responded to a stabbing call last Thursday afternoon in Huntington Park, California, which is located south of Los Angeles, police claim they came across Anthony Lowe Jr. The 36-year-old black man allegedly stabbed another person in an unprovoked attack, seriously injuring them, while carrying a long butcher knife.

By the time the police arrived, Lowe had jumped from his wheelchair. He tries to flee as they make an effort to restrain him and use a Taser twice with little success. Social media videos appear to show two officers approaching Lowe as he staggers away from them. He appears to wave a knife at the police at one point as he turns back toward them and keeps running.

Police shot the suspect at least eight times out of concern that he would brandish his knife at them. After that, one of the officers handcuffed Lowe after standing over him with their guns still drawn.

At a Monday press conference held in front of the Huntington Park Police Department, Lowe's family condemned the shooting. They contend that he could not have posed a serious threat because he was upset about the recent loss of his legs. At the knees, both legs were amputated.

Dorothy Lowe referred to the incident as "my son being murdered." The deceased suspect's cousin, Ellakenyada Gorum, said, "You guys knew your lives weren't in danger. He is moving by using his limbs. How heartless could they possibly be?

The shooting is being looked into by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The three officers who engaged in the altercation with Lowe appeared to be black, at least one of them.

The incident comes after Tyre Nichols' death in Memphis earlier this month as a result of beatings. In connection with the death of Nichols, who was also black, five black police officers have been accused of murder. In the US, protests against police brutality have been sparked by that case.
