NUS Business School Professor Simon Poh discusses on the back of news of Trump's tax returns last week and said why paying taxes matters if nobody cares whether Trump is paying taxes or not. Tax is often seen as a civic duty that has to be paid by every citizen of that nation but when last week news of tax return to US president Trump was released it received huge attention from the voters even more than the news of he being Corona positive.
The key point that might be lightened in the election is that he paid US$750 in federal taxable income in 2016 and 2017 but none in 10 of the previous 15 years. Even there are many voters who literally don't care about it as they only believe that the president is a leader who can do his job well and whether the economy is sustainable, citizens are protected by ensuring law and order, and maintain a well-functioning society with a solid infrastructure that ensures living a quality life, in particular for the more vulnerable groups such as the unemployed, the young, the old, the sick and the handicapped.
Where most Americans care about the personality and integrity of the presidential candidate and as a head of state he should have exemplary conduct and character, performing civic duty by paying his fair share of taxes. This group consists of a huge number that could be the result of the election.
