TEHRAN:  The "oppressive" US sanctions against Iran should be repealed in a way that allows other nations to easily invest in Iran while upholding their long-term interests, said by  Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).

According to Xinhua news, quoting Iran's Nour News, Shamkhani made the comments during a meeting with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani of Qatar, who was in town. He was cited as stressing that Iran will remain dedicated to diplomacy up until its legal rights in the nuclear talks were realised.

Al Thani's visit to Tehran came after recent indirect negotiations between Iran and the US in Doha over their disagreements about the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, often known as the 2015 Iranian Nuclear Deal (JCPOA).

In exchange for the lifting of sanctions, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear programme when it signed the JCPOA with major world powers in July 2015. However, former US President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the pact in May 2018 and reinstituted unilateral sanctions against Iran, which led the latter to renege on some of its pact obligations.

The Vienna nuclear negotiations with Iran got underway in April 2021, but they were put on hold in March of this year because to political tensions between Tehran and Washington.
