DHARAMSALA: Uzra Zeya, the US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, has arrived in India and is expected to meet the Dalai Lama, as well as officials from the government-in-exile based in this northern hill town Himachal Pradesh, on Wednesday, marking the first major step in the US policy of assisting in the promotion of dialogue between Beijing and the spiritual leader.

The high-profile meeting, which is her first since becoming the Biden administration's point person on Tibet in December 2021, is seen as a critical step by the administration in exile in pressuring China to respect the human rights of Tibetans, who have been facing extinction of their unique religious, cultural, and linguistic identity for over six decades under China's oppressive rule.

"Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights and US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Uzra Zeya will come to India and Nepal on May 17-22 to deepen cooperation on human rights and democratic governance goals, as well as to advance humanitarian priorities," according to a statement released by the US Department of State on Monday.

"She will also address collaborating with India and Nepal during the Summit for Democracy's Year of Action." Anjali Kaur, USAID's Deputy Assistant Administrator for Asia, will be part of the group." "Namaste!" said Indian-origin Ambassador Zeya in a tweet upon her arrival on Tuesday morning. It's wonderful to be back in New Delhi. Look forward to conversations about how to further US India's shared ideals of human rights, humanitarian assistance, and democratic governance."

On May 15, Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) President Penpa Tsering, an elected leader of the Tibetan community in exile, informed the Dalai Lama of his first official tour to Germany, the United States, and Canada.
