Washington: Nicholas Burns, nominated by US President Joe Biden as China's next US ambassador, said China has always been aggressive against India on the Himalayan border and the US has to hold the Chinese government accountable in the event of not following the rules.

Burns told members of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations during a hearing on confirmation of his name as U.S. ambassador to China on Wednesday that the United States will challenge China where it needs to be challenged. He further said that whenever China takes steps against American values and interests, threatens the security of the United States or its allies or undermines the rule-based global order, the United States will take strict action against them.

Burns further said that 'China is taking an aggressive stance against India near the Himalayan border, against Vietnam, the Philippines and others in the South China Sea, against Japan in the East China Sea. He has launched a campaign of intimidation to Australia and Lithuania. "We are also right to support peaceful settlement of disputes and oppose unilateral action that undermines the status quo and stability in the Indo-Pacific region," he said.
