Use of ivermectin can have serious consequences: a US doctor

A US doctor has appealed to people to stop taking the anthelmintic drug ivermectin for the treatment of Covid-19. Taking it can be dangerous. Small doses of ivermectin are approved for use on humans, but not for Covid. It is a drug used in animals, the overdose of which can have serious consequences.

Ivermectin, one primarily used in veterinary medicine, can be used in small doses to treat certain human conditions. But despite being unproven so far, it is controversial to be promoted as a way to treat or prevent COVID. Ivermectin will be studied as a COVID treatment in the UK. Ivermectin's use in the US has become so common that Food and The Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement last month urging people not to take it.The FDA warned that taking large doses of the substance is "dangerous and can cause serious harm". Oklahoma is one of several US states grappling with the spread of the Delta COVID variant, with 18,438 new cases reported last week.

Ivermectin medication is used to treat certain parasitic roundworm infections. Curing parasitic infections helps to improve your quality of life. In people with weakened defense (immune) systems, curing roundworm infections can reduce the risk of developing a severe or life-threatening infection. Ivermectin belongs to a class of drugs known as antihelmintics. It works by paralyzing and killing parasites.
