Lucknow: The fate of 586 candidates contesting 55 seats in nine districts of the second phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections has been captured in EVMs. In the second phase on Monday, voters showed less enthusiasm than last time. According to the Election Commission, 62.52 per cent voting was recorded in 55 seats of the second round, as compared to 65.53 per cent in the 2017 assembly elections.

In the second phase, if you look at the voting trends in the Muslim belt and Ruhelkhand region of western UP, the voter turnout was three per cent less than the last election. However, in 2012, 65.17 per cent polling was recorded in these 55 seats. There was a 0.36 per cent increase in voting in 2017 compared to 2012. In the last elections, the increase in the vote percentage of these 55 seats had benefited the BJP and the opposition parties had suffered losses.

In the 2017 elections, out of these 55 seats, 38 of these seats were won by BJP candidates, while SP got 15 and Congress got two seats. In the 2012 elections, the SP had won 40 seats, while the BSP had won 8, the BJP 4 and the Congress 3. Thus, in 2017, the BJP had a gain of 34 seats, the SP had to lose 25 seats, the Congress 1 and the BSP 8.
