Lucknow: Voting is going on today for 11 MLC seats in Uttar Pradesh. A total of 199 candidates, including independents, besides BJP, SP, Congress and teachers unions are in the fray for the MLC seat of six teachers and five graduate quota of the state. This MLC election is considered very important for BJP, as it is far from the majority figure in Rajya Sabha. Voting is to be held from 8 am to 5 pm.
This election is important for the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh because it wants to increase the strength in the Legislative Council as well. This is the reason that BJP has directly fielded candidates from all the five seats in the Graduate Election Block and four out of six seats in the Teacher Election Section. In one seat of the Graduate Election Division, the BJP has supported the teacher's union candidate and has left another seat. The SP has fielded candidates for all 11 seats. Due to this, there is being seen as a close fight between the candidates of teacher organizations of both the parties.
Avneesh Singh Patel from Lucknow, Kedarnath Singh from Varanasi, Manvendra Singh from Agra, Dinesh Goyal from Meerut and Dr Yajnadatta Sharma from Allahabad Jhansi are pitting the seats of graduation quota from BJP. For the teacher quota, BJP has Umesh Dwivedi from Lucknow, Dinesh Vasistha from Agra, Shirishchandra Sharma from Meerut and Hari Singh Dhillo from Bareilly-Moradabad. The party has supported Chetnarayan Singh in Varanasi seat and Ajay Singh in Gorakhpur-Faizabad seat.
