Vaccination of children: Corporate hospitals in a race to earn money

Hyderabad: The central government is yet to issue guidelines for the distribution and administration of the vaccine. The juvenile vaccination process will be decided based on the manufacturing capacity of the vaccine company and the distribution of doses among the states and union territories. But to earn big money, private hospitals in the city have launched a campaign on the need to vaccinate children against Covid-19 for people aged 2-18. The hospitals are putting up banners that read, 'Wait It's almost over', with the tagline; Pre-book your child's COVID-19 jab at India's largest vaccinator.

One such hospital Rainbow Children's Hospital is asking parents to fill in basic details like name, age, gender and vaccine preference (Covaxin/Zydus). Dr K Hari Prasad, chairman, Apollo Hospitals, said, "We are making arrangements for immunization of adolescents. Just waiting for the government's approval. As of now we are not taking any pre-registrations." These hospitals are reaching out to parents through corporates, community-based organizations and schools.

It has introduced this approach in cities like Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Delhi, Visakhapatnam, Bengaluru and Chennai. However, all this is accompanied by a disclaimer stating that vaccination is subject to government approval and procedural guidelines. When asked, the officials concerned said that the government is waiting for the guidelines from the Centre. It seems that private hospitals are telling people about the facilities provided in the hospitals in the hope that they will also be made participants in the programme.
