Meera was a great devotee of Lord Krishna. She was born in 1498 in a Rajput family of Rajasthan. While his father's name was Ratan Singh and mother's name was Veer Kumari. From the very beginning Meera was a great devotee of Lord Krishna and when she was 4 years old, she asked her mother who would be her groom after seeing a marriage happening near her house. To this her mother pointed to the statue of Shri Krishna and said that he would be her groom. Since then Meera started considering Shri Krishna as her husband.
When Meera grew up, she had this belief in her mind that Shri Krishna would definitely marry her. Her voice was very melodious voice she used to sing song for Krishna. However Meera got married to Rana Sanga, the son of Maharana Sanga of Mewar. Meera did not want to do this marriage but because of family pressure, she had to do this marriage. Even after marriage, Meera's love for Krishna remains the same. Meera took with her the idol of Shri Krishna. Meera used to go to Krishna's temple daily after completing the work of her in-laws' house and there she used to worship the idol of Shri Krishna.
Meera Bai used to sing hymns for him in a melodious voice. Meera's love for Krishna was not liked by her in-laws and her mother-in-law insisted her to worship Durga Maa but Meera did not do so. However she clearly told her in-laws that she has already dedicated her life to Shri Krishna. After this Meera's in-laws tried to defame her and Meera's sister-in-law Udabai told her brother Rana that "Meera is in love with someone and she has seen Meera with that person." Hearing this, Rana Got very angry and reached the temple at midnight with sister Udabai. After reaching the temple, he saw Meera talking alone with the idol of Krishna. After seeing this scene he shouted angrily and ordered Meera to bring the lover she used to talk to in the middle of the night. In response to this, Meera pointed to the statue of Shri Krishna and said that he is the Lover of Meera and that she is married. This broke the heart of Rana. Meera's brother-in-law Vikramaditya was chosen as the new king of Chittorgarh. He did not like Meera's devotion towards Krishna and Meera's interaction with the people. It is said that he sent a basket of garlands of flowers, inside which a poisonous snake was kept, to kill Meera. When Meera opened the basket, a beautiful statue of Shri Krishna was present in it with a garland of flowers.
After this Vikramaditya mixed poison in the Prasad to kill Meera. Meera knew that there was poison in that prasad, yet Meera accepted that poisoned prasad because she had full faith that Shri Krishna would save her from poison. When the efforts to kill Meera started increasing, Meera wrote a letter to Tulsidas asking for his opinion about it. After this Tulsidas wrote in reply that leave them, who cannot understand you. Love for God is the only true love, other relationships are false.
Meera's life changed completely when Akbar and Tansen disguised themselves came to the temple of Chittorgarh to listen to Meera's songs. He touched Meera's holy feet and put a garland of precious diamonds and pearls in front of Krishna's statue. As soon as Rana received this news, he became very angry, after which he angrily told Meera to go and never show her face in life. He told her that, ‘Because of you, I and my family have been defamed a lot. You have disgraced us. Meera obeyed the words of Rana and started moving towards the river, dancing and singing songs in the thoughts of Krishna, with Govinda, Girdhari, Gopal chanting. As Meera tried to jump into the river, someone held her hand from behind and she was saved from drowning.” When Meera looked back, she found Shri Krishna. Meera could not believe it and fell unconscious in Krishna's lap.
According to the Mythology Krishna said, 'My dear Meera, your life with mortal relatives is over. Now you are free Be happy. You are mine and will always be mine. Meera went to Vrindavan after this incident. When Meera went to Vrindavan, Rana went there and apologized to her and asked her to come along, but Meera refused. And she said that her life is connected with Shri Krishna. After hearing this, for the first time the Rana understood Meera's feeling of love for Krishna and returned from Vrindavan. Meera reached Mewar and requested her husband Rana to allow her to stay in Krishna's temple. It is said that in Dwarka on the occasion of Janmashtami, Meera tells Krishna in the Dwarka temple that 'O Girdhari are you calling me, I am coming.' Rana and all the people present there are shocked to hear Meera saying this. After that a kind of light was generated in Meera as soon as she called Krishna and the doors of the temple closed by themselves. And when the doors open, Meera's sari is draped over the idol of Lord Krishna, but Meera is not there in the temple, only the sound of Meera and her flute is heard. It is said that Meera got absorbed in the idol of Krishna.
