Today, the birth anniversary of Adikavi Maharshi Valmiki, the creator of Ramayana, is being celebrated across the country. Maharshi Valmiki was born on the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month i.e. Sharad Purnima. The birth anniversary of Maharshi Valmiki is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the country.  According to mythology, Valmiki, the great sage of the Vedic period, was the first dacoit, but an incident in life changed him. Valmiki was a man of extraordinary personality, perhaps that is why people still organize many special events on his birth anniversary.

Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated on Sharad Purnima date. The puja time for the full moon date begins at 7.30 pm on October 19 and ends at 8.26 pm tonight. Valmiki Jayanti is also known as Pargat Diwas. Valmiki was born to Varun, the 9th child of Maharshi Kashyap and Aditi, and his wife Charshani. As a child, the Bhil community stole them and they were brought up in the Bhil community. Before Valmiki, his name used to be Ratnakar. Ratnakar used to rob people coming and going from the forest. Once Devarshi Narada was passing through the forest, Ratnakar took him captive too. Meanwhile, Devarshi Narada asked him why you commit all these sins. Ratnakar replied, 'I do all this for my family.' Narada was surprised and then asked him whether his family was willing to bear the consequences of his sins. Ratnakar replied, 'Feel free to say yes.'

That's when Narad Muni said ask the family members once before answering so quickly. Ratnakar came home and asked all the family members if anyone was ready to bear the consequences of his sins. Everyone refused. Ratnakar was deeply saddened after the incident and decided to give up all wrongdoing. He then became the ultimate devotee of Ram. After years of penance, he became so quiet that the ants made mounds around them. Therefore, he was given the title of Maharshi Valmiki, which means 'born from ant mound.'
